Institues Overview

Athabasca University (AU), Canada’s Open University, is one of the world’s foremost and fastest-growing online and open education institutions, serving over 40,000 learners across 81 countries. AU is second-largest university in Alberta and one of four comprehensive academic and research universities in Alberta. AU offers online bachelors, masters, and doctorate programs and online courses for personal learning and professional development.

AU’s open enrolment model helps remove barriers to learning so that anyone 16 years or older can register for most first-year undergraduate courses, regardless of previous education. AU also offers continuous enrolment—most courses start the first of every month. Students can study from anywhere—12 per cent live in rural, remote, or isolated areas. Students get access to e-texts and academic supports such as tutoring, academic advisors, and counselling. Although students often study independently, they are not left on their own.

On average, undergraduate students are 28 years old and graduate learners are 34 years old. Nearly three-quarters of students work while they study and nearly two-thirds of graduates are the first in their family to graduate from university. Studying online does require discipline, but it is perfect for those who are looking for a flexible, open pathway for their educational journey.
AU is committed to advancing research and is home to Canada’s only UNESCO Chair in Open Education, four Canada Research Chairs, and one Campus Alberta Innovates Program Chair.
