Canada Enhances Tool for Predicting Work Visa and Study Permit Processing Times

The processing time for Canadian visa and permit applications begins when Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) receives the application and ends when a decision is made. The IRCC is improving its online tool to help immigrants estimate processing times more accurately. The tool will provide forward-looking estimates, giving applicants a better idea of how long they may have to wait. These estimates will be updated regularly and cover various application categories, including citizenship, spouse visas, and more. The goal is to provide realistic and up-to-date information to applicants so they can plan accordingly.

The forward-looking processing times will apply to specific categories, such as Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Program, Federal Skilled Workers, Quebec Skilled Workers, and others. For other application categories, the IRCC will continue to use historical processing times, which are based on the time it took to process applications in the past.

As of May 7, 2024, the processing time for temporary residence applications, including study permits and work permits from outside Canada, was estimated at 14 and 21 weeks, respectively. However, applicants should note that processing times may vary depending on factors such as the type of occupation and application volume.

It's important to understand that processing time estimates are based on complete applications and do not include the time it takes to send applications between visa application centers and IRCC offices, or the time required for biometric processing. Applicants who have already applied should not reapply, as this will only delay their application further.

Overall, the goal of the IRCC's initiative is to provide transparency and clarity to applicants regarding the processing times for their visa and permit applications. By offering more accurate estimates, the IRCC aims to improve the overall experience for immigrants and help them plan their travels and stay in Canada more effectively.
