Understanding Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

Foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries flying to Canada are mandated to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before their journey. This requirement applies whether their intention is to visit the country or simply transit through.

Who Needs an Electronic Travel Authorization

Travelers flying to Canada from visa-exempt countries require an eTA, except for the following exemptions:

  • Those with a valid Canadian visa.
  • Travelers entering by land or sea.
  • Armed Forces on official duties.
  • Flight crew, civil aviation inspectors, and accident investigators.
  • French citizens traveling from St. Pierre and Miquelon.
  • Individuals with valid status in Canada entering from the US or St. Pierre and Miquelon (visitor, student, or worker).
  • Accredited diplomats.
  • Canadian citizens, dual citizens (if traveling on a Canadian passport), and permanent residents.

How to Obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization

Apply for an eTA through the Canadian federal government website. Before applying, ensure you have a valid passport, email address, and credit card to pay the $7 fee.

When to Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization

Apply as soon as your travel plans are confirmed. However, you can also obtain an eTA last minute via smartphone with an internet connection. Approval typically takes minutes, though some requests may require additional processing time.

Validity of Electronic Travel Authorization

An eTA is valid for five years or until the expiry of your passport or travel document, whichever comes first. There’s no limit to the number of entries to Canada within the eTA’s validity period.
