Canada granted citizenship to 374,832 people in 2024, reflecting its ongoing commitment to immigration.
Canada officially welcomed 374,832 new citizens in 2024, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to support immigration and naturalization. Although this number is slightly lower than the 379,957 new citizens in 2023, it still highlights Canada’s commitment to expanding its citizen base through various programs.
The highest number of citizenship grants occurred between April and June, with 104,218 people taking the oath. The last quarter of the year (October to December) recorded the lowest figures, with just 69,593 new citizens. December had the lowest single-month total, with only 18,160 individuals officially becoming Canadian.
In 2024, people from 217 countries became Canadian citizens. India remained the top source country, with 87,812 Indian nationals receiving citizenship—accounting for 23.43% of the total. This was a notable increase from 2023 when India contributed around 21% of all new citizens.
Other top source countries included the Philippines, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, the United States, Brazil, and France. Together, these nations made up 54% of all citizenship grants in 2024.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the current processing time for a citizenship application is about eight months. At the beginning of 2025, around 232,200 applications were under review, with 40,600 exceeding the standard processing timeline.
For those needing faster processing, IRCC offers urgent processing under specific circumstances.
Canada’s passport remains among the world’s most powerful. In the 2025 Henley Passport Index, it ranked 7th globally, allowing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 188 countries. This places it ahead of the United States, which ranked 9th.
To apply for Canadian citizenship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
For permanent residents, it typically takes around four years to become a citizen (three years of residency plus eight months of processing). Those transitioning from temporary status may take longer.
Applicants must provide proof of permanent residency, travel history, language proficiency, tax filing records, government-issued ID, and payment receipts for application fees.
Marrying a Canadian citizen does not automatically grant citizenship. Spouses must meet all standard requirements, including obtaining permanent residency first. Canada also allows dual citizenship, meaning new citizens can retain their original nationality if their home country permits it.
