Canada has changed its Express Entry system for 2025. A new Education category has been added, while the Transport category has been removed.
Canada’s immigration system is set for big changes as Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has revealed updates to Express Entry categories for 2025. These changes include introducing a new category, removing an existing one, and modifying the list of eligible occupations under several categories.
For 2025, IRCC has added an Education category, which includes five occupations. Meanwhile, the Transport category has been removed from the Express Entry system.
Additionally, IRCC has expanded the Healthcare category to include social service occupations, making room for more professionals in critical sectors.
While Express Entry continues to feature multiple categories, IRCC has prioritized the following for 2025:
Candidates in these categories will have a higher chance of receiving invitations to apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
The updated categories bring major shifts in which occupations qualify. Some fields have gained new roles, while others have seen occupations removed.
The category has grown with eight new occupations, including pharmacists, dental hygienists, pharmacy technicians, social workers, and community service workers. However, it no longer includes educational counselors, kinesiologists, and acupuncturists.
The STEM category has seen a major reduction, with 19 occupations removed. Roles such as software engineers, data scientists, architects, and web developers are no longer eligible under this category. No new occupations have been added.
This category has expanded significantly, with 19 new occupations added. These include construction managers, industrial electricians, heavy-duty mechanics, and gas fitters. However, four occupations, including machine fitters and elevator mechanics, have been removed.
Two new roles—agricultural service contractors and farm supervisors—have been added, while no occupations were removed.
This category supports professionals in early childhood and school education. It includes elementary and secondary school teachers, early childhood educators, and teacher assistants.
IRCC updates Express Entry categories to align with Canada’s economic and demographic needs. Occupation-based categories are shaped by labor market demands, ensuring key industries get the workforce they need.
Meanwhile, the French-language proficiency category supports Canada’s bilingualism goals, encouraging francophone immigration outside Quebec.
These changes reflect Canada’s ongoing efforts to fill labor shortages and strengthen essential sectors. Prospective immigrants should check the updated eligibility criteria and prepare accordingly.
