Express Entry : IRCC invites 7,500 candidates in the second weekly draw

Canada invited 7,500 French-speaking candidates in its latest Express Entry draw.

Canada’s immigration department has once again sent out invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residence through its Express Entry system. In the latest round held on March 21, 2025, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited 7,500 candidates. This draw specifically targeted individuals with strong French language skills.

To qualify, candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 379. This is the lowest CRS score for any Express Entry draw since February 29, 2024. Only candidates who created their Express Entry profiles before 2:53 a.m. Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) on March 6, 2025, were eligible.

Express Entry Draws in 2025

This latest draw is the fourth one in March and the second of the week. On March 17, 2025, IRCC held a draw for candidates under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), inviting 536 applicants with a minimum CRS score of 736. Earlier in the month, on March 6, another French-language proficiency draw took place, issuing 4,500 ITAs with a minimum CRS score of 410.

So far in 2025, IRCC has conducted several draws, inviting a total of 30,683 candidates to apply for permanent residence. These draws have been for different programs, including the Provincial Nominee Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and French-language proficiency.

IRCC's Focus on In-Canada Candidates

The Canadian government continues to prioritize candidates already living in the country. This strategy has been in place since mid-2024 and is expected to remain a key part of the immigration policy under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney. Although Carney has not yet issued a formal mandate letter to the new Immigration Minister, Rachel Bendayan, his previous policies supported giving preference to in-Canada candidates.

Express Entry Profile Validity

Candidates’ Express Entry profiles stay active for one year. After that, they automatically expire. If applicants want to remain in the pool, they must create a new profile through the IRCC permanent residence portal. IRCC advises candidates to save their previous information to make reapplying easier.

Understanding the Tie-Breaking Rule

When multiple candidates have the same CRS score, IRCC uses a tie-breaking rule to select who gets an ITA. Those who submitted their profiles before the specified cut-off time are invited first. Even if a candidate meets the minimum CRS score, they may miss out on an ITA if their profile was created after the tie-breaking time.
