Canada Drops CRS Bonus Points for Job Offers in Express Entry

Canada has made a major change to its Express Entry system. As of March 25, 2025, candidates will no longer receive extra Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for having a valid job offer, even if it is backed by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This decision impacts all candidates in the Express Entry pool who previously benefited from bonus points for arranged employment.

How the Change Affects Candidates

Before this update, candidates with job offers could get either 50 or 200 extra CRS points. This boost gave them a much higher chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. With the removal of these bonus points, many candidates will now have lower CRS scores, which could reduce their chances of being invited.

For example, consider two fictional candidates, Andrew and Anita.

  • Andrew had 540 CRS points, including 50 points for a job offer.
  • Anita had 500 CRS points with no job offer.

After the rule change, Andrew loses his 50 bonus points and now has only 490, while Anita’s score remains 500. If a draw sets the cut-off at 495, Anita would get an ITA, but Andrew would miss out.

Why the Government Made This Change

The Canadian government introduced this measure to prevent job offer fraud. Former Immigration Minister Marc Miller first announced the plan in December 2024. He stated that the goal was to stop candidates from illegally purchasing LMIAs to gain extra CRS points. By removing the job offer bonus, the government aims to make the system fairer and reduce fraudulent practices.

Authorities say this change is temporary, but they have not provided a specific end date.

What Happens to Candidates with ITAs or Ongoing Applications?

Candidates who already received an ITA or have ongoing permanent residence applications are not affected by this change. Their CRS scores will remain the same.

Impact on the Express Entry Pool

With job offers no longer boosting scores, candidates without offers now have a better chance of being selected. Their scores remain unchanged, while those who previously relied on extra points will see their scores drop.

Physicians Also Affected

The government has also removed a special rule for physicians. Previously, doctors with short-term job offers from provincial governments or healthcare organizations could qualify for arranged employment points. This rule no longer applies.

How CRS Works

The CRS is a points-based system that ranks candidates in the Express Entry pool. Points are awarded based on factors like age, education, language skills, and work experience. Candidates with higher scores have a better chance of getting an ITA for permanent residence.

Additional CRS points are still available for factors like:

  • French language skills
  • Post-secondary education in Canada
  • Having a sibling in Canada
  • Provincial or territorial nomination

Why It Matters

This change makes Express Entry more competitive for all candidates, regardless of job offers. It also shows the government’s commitment to strengthening immigration integrity by reducing fraud.
