Alberta introduces a new system for submitting Expressions of Interest for its AAIP Worker Streams.
Alberta is revamping its process for issuing Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for certain pathways in the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). This change, effective September 30, introduces a new system where candidates looking to apply for worker streams must submit a Worker Expression of Interest through an online form available on the AAIP portal.
By completing the Worker EOI, candidates will enter a pool specifically for worker stream applications, which allows them to be considered for provincial nomination. Importantly, there is no application fee for this process. Once submitted, the applications will be evaluated based on a points system similar to the federal Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Points will be awarded for various factors, including education (with additional points for those who studied in Alberta), language proficiency, relevant work experience (especially experience gained in Alberta), age, and family connections within the province.
Those who score higher on this points grid will have a better chance of receiving an invitation for provincial nomination, which will be communicated via email. However, Alberta emphasizes that candidates cannot submit a Worker EOI if they currently have an active Worker EOI, Entrepreneur EOI, or a draft or active application within the AAIP. Anyone wishing to create a new Worker EOI must withdraw their existing applications or EOIs first.
Alberta is encouraging potential applicants to take their time with submissions. The province will not start conducting draws for worker stream nominations until mid to late October, so there is no need for candidates to rush their applications.
The change in the EOI process comes as part of Alberta's efforts to better manage the high demand for worker stream applications and to align with its labour market priorities. Earlier this year, the province adjusted its application acceptance strategy to limit the number of applications in the pool at any given time. This targeted approach was designed to streamline processing times and manage the 9,750 Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations allocated to Alberta for 2024.
Several specific streams within the AAIP are affected by this new application strategy, including the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Rural Renewal Stream, Accelerated Tech Pathway, and Tourism and Hospitality Stream. The Alberta Opportunity Stream, in particular, faced overwhelming interest, leading to a pause in application acceptance from February to June. During that period, officials explained that the pause was necessary to manage the existing application inventory and prioritize immigration nominations for critical sectors experiencing labour shortages, such as healthcare, technology, construction, agriculture, and tourism.
This revised approach aims to provide more opportunities for applicants to engage with the program throughout the year, ensuring that Alberta can effectively meet its workforce needs while managing the flow of applications.
