Canada to Invite Sponsors for Parents, Grandparents PR in 2025

Canada plans to send sponsorship invitations for parents and grandparents in 2025.

Some Canadian citizens and permanent residents will get a chance to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency in 2025.

On March 7, 2025, Canada’s immigration department announced that it will send out invitations to apply (ITAs) under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) next year.

Sponsorship Invitations Coming in 2025

In January 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stated that no new invitations would be sent under the PGP this year. Instead, they are focusing on processing applications received in the 2024 intake.

However, the latest update means that individuals who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 might receive an invitation to apply in 2025. The government has not shared a specific date for sending these invitations but promised to provide more details soon.

IRCC follows a lottery system to randomly select potential sponsors from the pool of applicants. So far, all invitations under the PGP have gone to those who applied in 2020. The program has not yet re-opened for new applications.

Canadians who do not receive an invitation for the PGP can still bring their parents and grandparents to Canada using the Super Visa program, which allows for extended visits.

What is the Parents and Grandparents Program?

The PGP helps Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians reunite with their families by sponsoring their parents and grandparents for permanent residency.

To qualify, sponsors must meet minimum income requirements, and their relatives must be eligible to enter Canada. People cannot directly apply for the PGP; instead, they must first submit an interest to sponsor form and wait for an invitation.

Since 2020, the intake for new sponsorship applications has been closed. The government has been selecting sponsors from the 2020 applicant pool each year.

Super Visa: Another Option for Family Reunification

The Super Visa is an alternative for Canadians who want to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada. This program allows long-term visits without permanent residency.

Super Visas can last up to 10 years, allowing multiple entries. Visitors can stay for up to five years at a time and extend their stay by two years.

Sponsors must meet income requirements, and applicants must purchase private health insurance for their stay. Recently, the government eased insurance requirements, making it easier for applicants to find suitable coverage.
