The Edmonton Community Legal Centre was originally developed by a group of stakeholders who had a strong commitment to improving access to the legal system for all Edmontonians. As a result in 1998 the Edmonton Social Planning Council obtained funding to begin thedevelopment of the first pro bono legal centre in Edmonton. In 2002 the Edmonton Social Planning Council launched the Edmonton Centre for Equal Justice. On January 1st 2005 the Edmonton Centre for Equal Justice became an independent organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. In 2007 the name changed to the Edmonton Community Legal Centre to better reflect the purpose and mission of the organization.
