IRCC Raises Fees For Temporary Resident Applications From December 1, 2024

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced an increase in the fees for several temporary resident applications, effective December 1, 2024. The changes, ranging from 2.80% to 4.69%, will affect a variety of applicants, including those looking to restore their temporary resident status, return to Canada after inadmissibility, or seek temporary resident permits.

The fee adjustments cover a range of categories, including visitors, workers, and students, as well as applicants who require special permits or authorizations to enter or remain in Canada. Below is a breakdown of the new fees compared to the previous rates:

  • Restoration of Visitor Status: Increased to $239.75 from $229.00, a 4.69% increase.
  • Restoration of Student Status: Now $389.75, up from $379.00, a rise of 2.84%.
  • Restoration of Worker Status: Increased to $394.75 from $384.00, reflecting a 2.80% increase.
  • Authorization to Return to Canada: The fee has risen to $479.75 from $459.55, a 4.40% hike.
  • Criminal Rehabilitation (Grounds of Criminality): The cost now stands at $239.75, up from $229.77, a 4.34% increase.
  • Criminal Rehabilitation (Serious Criminality): This fee has been raised to $1,199.00 from $1,148.87, reflecting a 4.36% increase.
  • Temporary Resident Permit (TRP): The fee for this permit has risen to $239.75 from $229.77, a 4.34% increase.
  • International Experience Canada (IEC): This popular program now has a fee of $179.75, up from $172.00, marking a 4.51% increase.

The increase in fees follows a consistent pattern of adjustments aimed at keeping pace with inflation and the rising costs of providing immigration services. While the fee hikes are relatively modest, they reflect the IRCC's ongoing efforts to streamline operations and manage the growing demand for immigration services.

Applicants must ensure they pay the correct fees when submitting their applications. Online applications will require the updated fee at the time of submission, so applicants applying online are not expected to face any issues. However, if an applicant mailed their application before December 1 with the previous fee structure, the application will still be processed, but the applicant will need to pay the difference between the old and new fees.

IRCC has provided guidance on how applicants can pay the fee difference if necessary. Those who need to make additional payments can do so using the online payment system provided by IRCC.

The IRCC periodically reviews and adjusts application fees to ensure that the department can maintain service quality while managing the financial demands of the immigration process. These fee increases are designed to help the department keep up with inflation, reduce backlogs, and address the evolving needs of the immigration system.

With the fee adjustments now in effect, the IRCC encourages applicants to carefully check their application forms and fees before submitting to avoid any delays in processing.
