Minister Miller celebrates National Francophone Immigration Week, highlighting its significance to Canada.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, has issued a statement in celebration of National Francophone Immigration Week. This week, marking its 12th edition highlights the significant contributions of Francophone newcomers to Canada’s culture and economy under the theme "Our Heritage for Tomorrow." The week serves as a moment to appreciate the ways in which these newcomers help shape Canada, not only through their language and culture but also by playing an integral role in the community.

Minister Miller reflected on the importance of this week as an opportunity to celebrate the growth of the Francophone community in Canada while also acknowledging the challenges that still exist. In 2023, Canada surpassed its goal for French-speaking immigration by welcoming 19,700 new French-speaking permanent residents outside Quebec. These numbers reflect a significant upward trend and reaffirm Canada as a top destination for Francophones from across the globe. With such success in 2023, the government has set even higher targets for 2024 and plans to exceed the 6% goal.

The Minister also pointed to important developments in Canada’s immigration policies, including the launch of the Policy on Francophone Immigration in January 2024. This policy is part of a larger effort to support the growth of Francophone minority communities across the country. It includes a series of measures designed to enhance their economic vitality and ensure their continued cultural development. Furthermore, the 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan reinforces these commitments, with progressively higher targets for French-speaking permanent residents outside Quebec: 8.5% in 2025, 9.5% in 2026, and 10% in 2027. These ambitious targets are in line with the country’s long-term goal to maintain and grow the influence of Francophone communities.

During the 12th edition of National Francophone Immigration Week, Minister Miller celebrated the diversity and richness that Francophone newcomers bring to Canadian society. He emphasized the importance of preserving this heritage while also working to ensure that newcomers are successfully integrated into the wider community. As the Minister noted, sharing the Francophone culture with future generations is key to maintaining this vibrant part of Canada’s identity.
