Program Essentials

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the NWT Entrepreneur stream, candidates must meet several requirements:

  1. Language Proficiency: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English or French at Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 4. This proficiency is assessed through an official language test taken within six months prior to the application.
  2. Education and Work Experience: While there is no strict minimum requirement for education or work experience, candidates must possess the necessary qualifications and experience to implement their proposed business plan successfully.
  3. Investment: Applicants must invest a minimum of CAD 150,000 in their business venture. Additionally, they must have a personal net worth of at least CAD 250,000.

Investment Criteria

Entrepreneurs are required to own or commit to owning at least one third (33.3%) of the business they plan to establish or acquire in the NWT. However, candidates with a personal net worth exceeding CAD 1,000,000 may qualify even if they own less than one-third of the business.

The minimum investment and personal net worth requirements vary based on the location of the business:

  • Yellowknife: Minimum personal net worth of CAD 500,000 and a minimum investment of CAD 300,000.
  • Outside Yellowknife: Minimum personal net worth of CAD 250,000 and a minimum investment of CAD 150,000.

Candidates are also required to sign a business performance agreement and provide a good faith deposit of CAD 75,000, refundable upon meeting the agreement’s conditions.
