Spousal Open Work Permit Extension Available Now

Spouses Can Now Apply to Extend Their Open Work Permits

Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced an extension for Spousal and Family Class applicants on May 26, 2023. This new measure allows eligible individuals to extend their open work permits by 18 months, providing a boost to family reunification efforts.

To qualify for this extension, you must currently hold a valid open work permit set to expire before December 31, 2023. Eligible applicants include those who have applied for permanent residence and are awaiting a decision, spouses and dependent children of work permit holders, and spouses of study permit holders. Your biometrics must remain valid throughout the 18 months, you need a Canadian mailing address, your passport must be valid for at least 18 months beyond your current permit’s expiration, and you must be admissible to Canada.

Applying for this extension is straightforward. There are two main options:

  1. Opt-In Method: This free and easy option is available through your secure GCKey account. If you qualify, you should have received an email from an address ending in @cic.gc.ca or @notifications.canada.ca, guiding you to update your address and passport details and select "Opt-In" in your IRCC account. This option is only available until June 28, 2023, and you will receive your extended permit by mail.
  2. Standard Application: If you cannot use the Opt-In option by June 28, 2023, you can still apply for an open work permit extension. Submit a regular work permit application, citing this public policy and following IRCC’s special instructions.

The extension granted will be 18 months from the expiration date of your current permit. It's advisable to opt-in as soon as possible, even if your permit expires after July 2023, to avoid any last-minute changes by IRCC.

If you initially applied through a consultant, you can link your GCKey to your application or ask your consultant for account details. If neither option works, you can apply for the extension using the special IRCC instructions.

This move by the Canadian government underscores its commitment to keeping families together and supporting those on the path to permanent residency. Ensure you meet all criteria and apply promptly to benefit from this extension.
